Christine was woken up a few times Saturday night (Sunday Morning) to check her vitals, pain medication, etc. In the morning we were told that United was full and her transfer would not happen until evening. But then things changed again and the transfer was moved up to 2:15pm. She was taken via a transport van in a wheelchair down a slow and bumpy Highway 61.
The transferring of hospitals messed up her medication cycle and she was in a lot of pain. St. John's had taken her off of the IV's in the morning and put her on pills but United took away her St. John's pills and ordered their own which took time. It was not until late evening that all the medicine was back on a timed schedule that was working.
But, the whole reason for the transfer was so she could see her babies and that part of the day was a success. She spent time with them around 3pm and then again in the evening when we had visitors: her dad, brother, and sister-in-law, and our friends Bill and Julie and their twin boys. My parents somehow had their phone off the hook all day so I was unable to call them to arrange for them to visit.
The babies continue to do okay. It is hard for me to write about their condition for several reasons. First, it is very emotional to think about and remember all the things I have been told about their condition since they were born. Second, I don't remember a lot of it even when I try. Third, I don't necessarily understand all the medical terms I've been given. With that disclaimer, here it goes.
The following is the same for both. At birth both were given breathing tubes. Both were given lines through their umbilical cords for feeding and giving them blood, etc.
The boy has many bruises on his body. This is most likely from his wanting to be delivered naturally and having progressed in that before the cesarean was decided on; but it could be from other things as well. On Saturday he was taking in so much air on his own that they took out the breathing tube. However on Sunday it had to be put back. The girl had her breathing tube removed on Sunday and then put back in again.
The boy's lines in through the umbilical cord were not working so they moved those lines to his hand/wrist.
They have each been given a lot of blood.
They each have several x-rays a day. They wheel the machine right up to them.
The biggest concern is with potential bleeding in the head. We will have our first indication if this is happening by the end of the day Monday.
I spent the night in Christine's room.
Christine can have visitors on Tuesday. She is in room 2434 at United. The babies can also have visitors (over age 13) if we are there.
