This afternoon while napping Hailey managed to get completely out of her danny sling. She was at the low end of her crib, not at all concerned when I went in to check on her. She might not have been concerned but we were. We decided to flatten the crib and get rid of the sling before her next nap.
Tonight will mark her first night ever sleeping flat and free from wires. We were not too worried about her falling asleep this way, as she has fallen asleep on the floor, but we are concerned about what she will do when she wakes up in the middle of the night. She has been "sleeping through the night" since last December but we are not sure what the new sleeping arrangement will do to that. We know she does not literally sleep all the way through but quickly gets herself back to sleep when she does wake up. Now that she will not necessarily be waking up right where she was when she went to sleep, and will have freedom to move around, we worry...
Hailey was first put in the sling with an elevated bed on
September 22 at the hospital to help her deal with her reflux. While it was noted in the blog that day it did not make much of an impact as later that evening was when we learned for the first time that Hailey's eyesight was in serious danger.
Tonight while Hailey was drinking her last bottle of the day Christine noticed that all of a sudden Hailey's right ear was covered in blood. We both did our best not to panic although that was our gut instinct. A quick search online pointed to only two likely scenarios: either she had scratched herself or it was the result of an ear infection.
Hailey has scratched herself repeatedly so that seemed like a possibility. Plus she had shown no signs of illness or an ear infection other than crying rather passionately for about a half hour an hour earlier. (There had been no crying at the time of the blood.)
We checked her fingers to see if that could point us towards the weapon used in scratching. There were fingers with blood on them but there had been so much blood that did not really prove anything. We searched and searched her ear for the scratch and found nothing. We resigned ourselves to the ear infection and decided to wait to call the doctor in the morning.
All during this time Hailey could not have been happier or more full of energy.
We decided to put her to bed but to first clean the ear a little better so we would know for sure if there was new blood the next time we checked on her. That ear cleaning revealed the scratch as blood starting running once the scabbed over blood in one area of her ear was knocked off. We had never been more relieved to see blood gushing! We quickly stopped the bleeding and were happy to know that nothing was wrong with our baby.
