New Car Seat

One year ago Hailey failed her car seat test meaning she could not breathe and keep her heartbeat steady sitting in the seat. This and her subsequent failure of a second test kept her from using her car seat, relegating her to a car bed, until mid December. Today we retired her infant car seat and moved her up to a convertible car seat. She is well below the weight limit for the infant seat but just a half inch under the height limit.

While we were very happy to be done with the car bed last December, it is with some sadness that the infant seat use comes to an end. Buckling her into a seat inside the house and then simply "dropping" the seat into its base in the car is a thing of the past. So too is the ever available comfortable chair to put her in when out and about. Our baby is growing up.

The picture above with her body twisted against the closet door is how she chose to nap this afternoon.

This evening Hailey got her first ride in the new car seat as we drove her to Grandma and Grandpa's house to Trick or Treat.

Empty Boxes

I did some rearranging of the kitchen resulting in some empty boxes for recycling. Before I had them all flattened Hailey had acquired a couple for her own use. She played with them for over an hour straight while I got more done in the kitchen than I had imagined would be possible.

Whole Milk

After fifteen months of pumping Christine has started to cut back and today's bottles had a little whole milk mixed in with the formula and breast milk to ease the transition for Hailey.

Early Childhood Session #29

This morning Hailey became frustrated again with her music player. It would not play music because she had switched the main switch to off. She is now strong enough to easily switch the main power switch but does not yet grasp what it does. Since there is no immediate feedback to switching it on, as the separate big button must be pushed again to start the music, it is a hard concept to teach her.

Today Hailey had another occupational therapy session.

This evening I told Hailey we would need to ignore her for four nights, maybe five if the Yankees messed up. We of course did not really ignore her but did watch the first game of the World Series. Bad news for Hailey, it really will be at least five nights as the Yankees lost Game One. (And no, a Phillies sweep is not happening.)

Real Food

Hailey got to go for a stroller ride this afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa.

Hailey's meal of real food did not go as well tonight as it did last night. Hailey did not want to feed herself, so many pieces that were picked up off the highchair tray ended up on the floor. Even when we fed her the food she made faces to indicate she did not like it. After all that she eagerly ate her cereal.

Fifteen Months

Weight: 7,983 grams = 17 pounds 9.6 ounces
(Hailey at Twelve Months: 6,691 grams = 14 pounds, 12 ounces)

Length: 72.6 cm = 28.6 inches
(Hailey at Twelve Months: 68.6 cm = 27 inches)

Head Circumference: 44.5 cm = 17.52 inches
(Hailey at Twelve Months: 43 cm = 16.93 inches)

Today Hailey turned Fifteen Months Old and celebrated with a checkup at her pediatrician's office.

Barring a differing second opinion at next week's NICU Follow Up Clinic appointment, Hailey will not be getting the monthly Synagis shot for RSV.

Hailey will get the regular flu shot and the H1N1 shot when available. She received her first half dose of the regular flu shot today and will get the second half in a month. She also received a Diptheria, Tetanus & Pertussis vaccination today. The Chicken Pox vaccine will be given in a month with the second half of the flu shot.

Hailey can start drinking whole milk in place of formula. Breast milk is still good for the antibodies but can be phased out as well. She still needs her Poly-Vi-Sol with iron for the next three months but we can stop adding pear juice to her milk.

Hailey can eat "anything" at this point as long as it is soft enough and small enough. (We will miss the convenience of food in jars.) We should continue to feed her baby cereal and if she decides she does not like it anymore, than we will need to mix it in with her food.

We need to begin brushing Hailey's teeth every night to create the habit now while it is easier.

Tonight Christine set Hailey up with her first real meal. Hailey fed herself crackers, cheese, carrots, potatoes and grapes, all of course cut up into barely discernible bite sizes. Then Christine fed her cereal and a couple of hours later gave her a bottle.

After her big meal Hailey was looking at a picture of the three of us and pointed to me and said dada. Then when I kissed her goodnight she said it again. For several months she has been saying mamamama and dadadada and even sometimes just mama and dada but for the most part it has not seemed to have meant anything. Tonight it sure seemed like it did.

Previous pediatrician visits: July 27, May 6, February 2, January 2, December 1, November 21, and November 10.

Half Bottles

Twice today Hailey only drank half a bottle. We think the lack of appetite is due to teething.

Tomorrow Hailey has her 15 month appointment with her pediatrician in the morning.
