Eye Exam #13

3,040 grams = 6 pounds 11 ounces

This morning Hailey had her first eye exam conducted by Dr. Benegas since prior to the first laser surgery. We drove to her Woodbury office in the coldest weather of the season, approximately -7 F. The car did well and so did Hailey. The only difference I noted over other car trips is that she was very awake when we got to the car after leaving the clinic. Most other trips she has been out while in the car.

We got good news from the ophthalmologist. Hailey does not need glasses right away. She has very mild, especially considering her circumstances, near sightedness. Her vision is -.75 in one eye and -1 in the other. (We did not write down those numbers right away so although we are really sure about the -.75, the other eye might have been -1.25.)

If the vision stays like this she will not need glasses until around age two. The odds of it getting better are very low so there is little chance that she will not need them at that time. Her need for glasses will likely be lifelong, although contacts or Lasik surgery would be options for her way down the road.

There are no guarantees that this prognosis will go unchanged but with Hailey's next exam with Dr. Benegas scheduled for two plus months from today, we know worst case she will not be in glasses until at least March.

This afternoon Hailey was visited by a Children's Home Care nurse. Hailey's weight is only up an ounce from last week. This past week we have been giving her a little more freedom to sleep and wake up on her own, letting her tell us when she is hungry. We may need to take back some of that freedom and revert to more scheduled feedings.

Hailey had blood drawn from her heel again. Just like last week, we did not receive a call about the lab work so we assume that no news is good news.
