Eye Trouble

1,800 grams = 3 pounds 15 ounces

Tonight Hailey had her second eye exam and things do not look good. Things have taken a dramatic change for the worse since her first exam two Mondays ago. She now has Stage 3/Plus of ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity) disease in Zone 1 of both eyes. This means that there are new abnormal twisted blood vessels growing towards the center of her eyes.

Unless the surgeon who will see her in the next few days has a different diagnosis Hailey will most likely have laser surgery on both eyes within the next week. If that surgery goes well there is a chance that the abnormal blood vessels would eventually disappear and she could have "potentially good vision." If things do not go well then the worst case scenario is blindness.

The eye exam resulted in the first really loud cries we have heard from Hailey. She did not like the exam one bit. I am sure she did not like the first exam any more than this one but back then she still had a breathing tube so she couldn't make any noise.

The rest of this post is rather trivial after the eye exam but here it is...

Hailey has started to occasionally suck on her thumb.

Hailey was given pear juice as a laxative and that did the trick.

Hailey had reflux issues all day including spitting up during a feeding. This happened yesterday as well. To help prevent this, as of 6pm tonight, she is in a Danny Sling which allows the crib to be set at a higher angle yet keep her from slipping down. They have also slowed down the speed at which she is being fed. They now pump the milk down her feeding tube over the course of forty five minutes rather than the 30 minutes it has been.

Hailey is in her own clothes now.

Haily's feeding tube now goes down through her nose rather than her mouth. This is much more comfortable as she doesn't have to constantly feel it on her lips and tongue.

It has been awhile since we have had such a bad day with Hailey. Most of our tears of late have been about Ryan. Please pray for our little girl.
