Three Months Old (Eye Exam #8)

2,540 grams = 5 pounds 9 ounces

Three months ago when Hailey was born we had a high in the low eighties. Today we had our first snow of the season. We went to church together this morning for what could be the last time for awhile if Hailey does come home this week. When we left we were greeted to a lovely rain/snow mix. After a quick errand at Rosedale we were off to the hospital.

Around 1:30pm, while Christine was busy feeding Hailey we learned that Dr. Quiram was coming soon for Hailey's eye exam. We were expecting her on Monday so this came as a surprise. They started Hailey on drops for dilation while we waited.

Dr. Quiram was in the room about an hour later and thankfully delivered very good news. When she was done with the exam she said "the left eye looks fantastic..." Now that is great to hear but immediately both of our minds started spinning about what she might say about the right eye. Obviously the right eye was not going to be "fantastic." How much worse than fantastic we could only dread to find out.

But back to the left eye. The bad blood vessels in the left eye are continuing to regress and the blood that was along the ridge has been absorbed. It is responding exactly like we would hope.

Okay, the right eye is really in good shape as well. The bad blood vessels are also regressing in the right eye. The only difference is that the blood that is in the right eye is still not completely gone. But it is continuing to be absorbed by her body so if things continue it could end up in as good a shape as the left eye. The next exam will be Election Day, Tuesday November 4th, at the doctor's Oakdale office, assuming we have left the hospital before next Monday.

As for going home, Hailey's feeding abilities, including controlling her heart rate and blood saturation levels while eating, are the main things keeping her at Children's. She seems to have breastfeeding pretty well down but bottle feeding is still a struggle. She will have to get a few bottles a day so she can get various nutritional supplements so learning to bottle feed is equally important. She may be seen by the speech therapy folks tomorrow to get their help with the bottle feeding. (Yeah, I'm not entirely getting the connection either.)

Hailey was visited this afternoon by Christine's relatives Steve & Claudia and Tom & Jessica. She was also visited by her Grandpa Bruce.
