Megan

2,440 grams = 5 pounds 6 ounces

This morning Megan emailed us to say that Hailey could be going home as soon as next Tuesday. Other details from this morning's rounds include decisions to discontinue Diuril, increase iron supplements, and increase feeds to 46ml.

One of the practitioners came in to talk with Christine this afternoon. She wanted to make it clear that once she is home, Hailey is staying in our house and not having visitors. Hailey, like almost all preemies, has "chronic lung disease," and is incredibly vulnerable to germs and viruses.

The practitioner also talked about the range of emotions that can and most likely will hit us during those first days. The loss of Ryan will be fresh again as we are home with just one of our two babies. I wasn't there for this conversation but thankfully Megan was there for Christine who started crying.

If Hailey really does come home on Tuesday, which will depend on how well she bottle and breastfeeds over the next few days, then today was the last shift with Megan.

Megan signed up to be a primary site unseen. She was on vacation when Christie called her and asked if she could sign her up. Ever since, Megan has made it fun to be at the hospital. We've had serious conversations with her and she has been with us on some pretty bad days but mostly I remember the laughter.

We joke about her hospital ID that doesn't look anything like her, and her drivers license that makes her look as old as we are. She refused to have her picture taken the other day and washed her hair this morning rather than last night so she would look good for pictures. You would not think she could take a bad picture but then we have seen the evidence to the contrary.

Megan has been a great advocate for Hailey, not only in the care she has given but in speaking up during rounds for what she thinks is best for our daughter. She and Charity were nominated for an award for a past patient situation where they were primaries. The award will be given out at a breakfast tomorrow morning. You can tell she is very proud of the care she gave that merited the nomination and I really hope they win.

This evening it was time to say goodbye to Megan but with Megan it's hard to be sad. Plus, she is working Wednesday so there is a decent chance we will have one last shift with her.

I won tickets in a drawing at work last week for tonight's Wild game. So, after saying goodbye to Megan, we walked over to the Xcel Center. It was the first Wild Game we had been to in over five years. Both the Wild and the Buffalo Sabres came into the game undefeated. Things looked good with a 3-1 lead with four minutes left but the lead slipped away and the Sabres forced overtime. The Wild then gave up another quick goal in the sudden death period to lose the game.

We came back to Children's and Christine was able to feed Hailey a little over half of her bottle. The balance needed to be through the feeding tube.
